This further broadens the gap between the rich and the poor in the society creating more barriers to the disenfranchised segments of our community. Creating a conducive environment for the healing process can thus be complicated by costs implications as well as other factors. The Intuitionist, by Colson Whitehead, deals with the exploration of Lila Mae Watson, a black female intuitionist, who undergoes a quest to reveal what Intuitionism is all about. As a result of her quest, the connection between James Fulton, the creator of Intuitionism and Lila Mae Watsons role as character is revealed. Lila M. Watson, the protagonist of this novel, endures a number of experiences as the first black elevator intuitionist. An accident occurs with an elevator which she was in charge of. From then on the story introduces Lila Maes quest for answers. Lila Maes life goes into detail about how fragments of her life have been shattered with grief, and racism above all. During her exam about elevators in college, she was answering flawlessly with details and precisions at the professors questions. The last question had nothing to do with elevators, just a reckoning to her; so that she knows that there are only twelve colored inspectors and they most of them are not even working, by making her know that even though she answered swiftly she didnt know everything: So you dont know everything; that will be all Miss Watson. (p 53) Within the story she goes into a subtle exploration of her own identity, race, and duty as a person in her position. This leads into the elusive quest for the black box and ultimately Jamess Watsons Perfect elevator But this quest of hers intertwines with the experiences of James Fulton. This intricate character deals with the many hardships that Lila Mae dealt with during her youth, only with the slight fact that he dealt with these issues with his inner self. Fultons secretive and deceiving nature is the actual cause of all the events that take place. James is actually a black man with light skin, who does not feel comfortable letting the world know that he is black because of his status. Fultons hatred of himself and his lie of whiteness(p 239). Although hes not to blame because in the world they live in it is not as easy being a person of color. There was no hope for him as a colored man because the white world will not let a colored man rise. (p 240) For this very reason he decides to play the role of a white man. At early age he knew he would be confused for a white person, so he used this trait to achieve his greatness in life. Overtime Fulton became godly to people, because of his knowledge about elevators and what he had to write about them. Every Tuesday James Fulton. stood in the downstairs drawing room and lectured on the intricacies of his science (p 54). One does not realize that this intuitionism is created as a joke. A joke that is taken seriously and soon evolves into the world itself. Both Fulton and Watson are two figures who struggle for one cause only. To achieve their goal in life, for Watson it is to find and reveal the perfect elevator into the world, and for Fulton it is to create and implement this perfect elevator into the world. As two black figures in a white-ruled society it is their socialistic duty to fulfill their goals and be aware that this achievement is critical for their community. Lila M. Watson is forced to go on a journey that is composed of events that will prove her innocence about the incident, discover the perfect elevator, and like Fulton, take an important position in society. She sees herself as a person who has a duty to fill Fultons shoes. In the other hand Fultons lies and secrets are what form the entire story. After having developed intuitionism for that long, he realized he needs a successor, who will deal with society. But it is Intuitionism that must be kept important until the world is ready for the perfect elevator. Fulton does not publish his work for this very reason. Like Lila Maes duty of finding his perfect elevator, it is his to create it. But little do we know that this perfect elevator is nothing more then what he has created as a mockery of the world he lives in. It consist of a perfect world where there exists no racial constrains. Fulton is a man who creates a perfect society in his mind and puts it in paper, but never reveals it. Lila Mae discovers this but she knows that even though shes been living in a world of lies, it is her duty to preserve this knowledge until the world becomes a place like Fulton metaphorically described in his books. This the story that deals with ones accomplishment to fool the world and in the meantime while everyone is fascinated by his accomplishments and fake works, he devotes his life to creating a blueprint to a better world for existence.

Aspects of Home Schooling Do parents always know what is best for their child? When a parent says that they want to home school their child are they making the right decision? After all, parents are the ones that teach their children how to walk and talk. After all, they are the ones that are most interested in making sure that their child receives the best education, why shouldn’t they be the ones to teach their children? Being home schooled can have both a positive and negative effect on a child. One such reason why it would be beneficial for a child to be home schooled is to teach values and morals to the child. Children often learn things at a young age that they should not know; such as vulgar language or violence. Such bad behavior is present through out our society. After all it does not matter what school a child goes to, since children from all walks of life are present in the classroom. It is in the classroom where children hear things they should not be hearing. On the other hand if the child is being home schooled, then violence and vulgarities are things the parent does not have to worry about. A home environment also provides a child with less distraction and less peer pressure (HSLDA.com). Studies have also shown that students that are home schooled score higher on than their average peers. Once they get to college, children that are home schooled have higher grade point averages than the average college students (HSLDA.com). Another positive reason for home schooling is that the worry of a poor social life for the student does no longer have to be a concern for parents that might want to home school their children. Predicting the Products of Double Replacement Reactions Essay

Introduction – A double replacement reaction is a chemical reaction between two compounds where the positive ion of one compound is exchanged with the positive ion of another compound. If you have the reactants of two reaction solution that you can determine the products. All you need to do is pair the positive parts of the compounds with the other compounds negative part. Once you find the products you can determine their phase of matter by using Table H. You can also use Table F to determine the solubility guidelines for aqueous solutions. If the product falls under soluble or exceptions to insoluble it is in the aqueous stare. If the product falls under insoluble or exception to soluble it is a precipitate. Once you have completed those steps you can determine if a equation went to completion or not. In order for a reaction to go to completion it must have one of the following three things. First, a gas is produced. This gas is usually H2, O2, or CO2. Secondly, a covalent compound (such as water) is formed. Finally, a precipitate (solid) is formed. When none of those things happen it is considered to be â€Å"no reaction.† When one of those things does happen the reaction is considered to be â€Å"completed.† It is considered to be completed because all of the reagents in the sample have completely reacted out. Purpose – The purpose of this lab was to be able to predict the phase of matter after a double replacement reaction, what the products were, and if the reaction was completed or not. Materials and Methods – †¢.1 M NaCl †¢.1 M AgNO3 †¢.1 M Na3PO4 †¢.1 M NaOH †¢.1 CuSO4 †¢Five droppers †¢Spot Plate †¢Pen/Pencil †¢Paper †¢Goggles †¢Apron Safety Precautions – †¢Wear goggles and apron at all time while inside the lab. †¢You may use rubber gloves o protect your hands from the chemicals that will be used in the lab. †¢If any chemical gets on your skin tell the teacher right a way and thoroughly rinse it with water. †¢If any chemicals happen to get into your eye use the eye wash bottle or the emergency eye wash station. †¢Make sure you wear closed shoes in the lab. †¢No horse playing or inappropriate behavior in the lab. †¢When the lab is complete dispose of the chemicals correctly and place them correctly on the drying rack. Procedure – First, using a spot plate, place five drops of NaCl solution into wells I and IV, five drops of NaOH into wells II and V, and five drops of Na3PO4 into wells III and VI. Next, using the diagrams listed on the lab sheet, add five drops of CuSO4 to wells I, II, and III and five drops of AgNO3 to wells IV, V, and VI. Finally, note any color changes or precipitates formed and record your observations. Observations and Data – I. Appearance before: Clear liquid state. After: Still liquid state, light blue color. II. Appearance before: Clear liquid state. After: Changed to solid state, dark blue. III. Appearance before: Clear/transparent liquid state. After: Solid state, light blue. IV. Appearance before: Clear liquid state. After: White, cloudy, solid state. V. Appearance before: Clear liquid state. After: Cloudy, bits of pieces, brownish, solid state. VI. Appearance before: Clear and bubbly. After: Yellow, cloudy, precipitate present, solid state. Question – 1.Soluble means a substance is able to be dissolved, esp. in water. 2.Insoluble means a substance is incapable of being dissolved. 3.When the symbol (aq) is placed next to an ionic compound it means any solution in which water (H2O) is the solvent. 4.A precipitate is to form an insoluble compound either by reacting two salts or by changing the temperature to affect the solubility of the compound. Also it is the name given to the solid that is formed as a result of a precipitation reaction. 5.You can identify a precipitate when it is written in a reaction if there is a (s) next to one of the reactants or products. If that (s) symbolizing a solid is not present you will have to look at Table F. Table F shows ions that form soluble/insoluble compounds. If the product/reactant falls under insoluble or the soluble exception column it is a precipitate. You can identify a precipitate in a reaction if the reactant or product is in solid form. 6. Balanced equation and state: a.No Reaction b.NaOH + CuSO4 –> Na2SO4 + Cu(OH)2 (s) c.2Na3PO4 + 3CuSO4 –> 3Na2SO4 + Cu3(PO4)2 (s) d.NaCl + AgNO3 –> NaNO3 + AgCl (s) e.NaOH + AgNO3 –> NaNO3 + AgOH (s) f.Na3PO4 + AgNO3 –> NaNO3 + Ag3PO4 (s) Conclusion – The main idea of this experiment is that if you have the reactants of a double replacement reaction that you should be able to find out several things. First, you can figure out the products from switching the positive ion with the other positive ion. Once you have found the products you can determine the phase of matter they are in from Table F and H. Finally, you can also determine whether the reaction went to completion or not. The observations and data above leads me to believe that our experiment is valid. We were very careful and observant of the directions that needed to be taken. Once source of error could have been that certain substances were placed in the wrong wells, causing your data to stray from the correct information. One way this experiment could be applied to a real life situation is he residue in the bottom of a glass in your bathroom. There is stuff dissolved in water, and any trace of water left in a glass will eventually evaporate and leave the residue. Another example can be found if you have ever been to a salt marsh along the ocean, you will see lots of salt deposits, which are just precipitated salt from the ocean water. One improvement that can be done to the lab so that students obtain more valid information is having bigger wells. This way students can see which solutions they are mixing and observe the reaction better. From learning it in class on the smart board to actually seeing the reaction using chemicals, this lab has really helped me further understand how double replacement reactions work, and what can be learned when all you have are the products.

How do The Odyssey and The Crucible use the hero in order to explore the concerns of their times?

The concept of what constitutes a hero varies according to the values, culture, context and setting of the society in question. Homer in his epic poem The Odyssey and Arthur Miller in The Crucible through the portrayal of the hero's in their texts; Odysseus and John Proctor, reflect the values of the time in which the text was set but more importantly provide a social commentary on the context of the texts. Both looking to the past to provide answers and draw parallels with the present. The Odyssey was written approximately in 700 BC and was set in twelfth century BC, in what was known as the Bronze Age. The Greeks believed that this earlier period was a more glorious and sublime age, when Gods still frequented the Earth and heroic, godlike mortals with superhuman attributes populated Greece. The Odyssey is episodic in nature and in many ways consisted of nation building myths which were unifying and drew on what was common in Greek culture by detailing the exploits of the classical archetypal Greek hero, Odysseus. Essentially it is an epic tale in which the wicked are destroyed, right prevails, and the family is reunited. On the other hand, The Crucible was written in the early 1950's in America and is set in 1692 in Salem, a small town in colonial Massachusetts. It follows the witch-hunts of 1692 which began when several young girls were stricken with an illness characterized by symptoms of hallucinations and seizures, which were ascribed to witchcraft. This led to the eventual execution of thirty individuals for the crime of witchcraft. They were tried and convicted in an atmosphere of moral absolutism through which Miller alludes to the events which took place in the 1950's before the House of Un-American Activities Committee in Washington. The Crucible can be viewed as allegorical text not for anti-communism, or as a faithful account of the Salem trials, but as a powerful timeless description of how intolerance and hysteria can intersect and tear a community apart. Furthermore, in contrast with Odysseus, John Proctor is a tragic hero, who would rather die then confess and lived with a marred name. This idea of nobility is inseparable from the tragedy genre. Tragedy in many ways enlightens, in that it points the heroic finger at the enemy of a man's freedom. The quest for freedom is the quality in the tragedy which exalts. Both texts are framed by religious imagery. In The Odyssey Odysseus does not question the power of the Gods and in many ways Homers text can be viewed as a moral lesson, through the omnipresent nature of the god's as they guide the wandering hero home. This reflects the Greek notion that the gods exercise absolute power over the mortal world. In the poem mortals are constantly making sacrifices to the gods to earn their favour. Conversely, offending the gods creates immense problems as is illustrated through Poseidon's grudge against Odysseus for blinding his son Polyphemos. Moreover, it is only through Athena's guidance throughout the text that Odysseus can survive his dangerous adventures. This distinguishes an important point as it reiterates not only the all-powerful nature of the gods but also introduces the idea that if Odysseus the hero cannot survive without guidance from the gods then the rest of the members of society must accept their fate as lying in the hands of the gods. What must also be noted however are the characteristics of the gods, which were a mixture of magical, immortal powers and basic human instincts, the gods were not perfect. Through this portrayal of the gods in the text Homer presents a more glorious time in Greek culture in a time when Greece was only a shadow of its former greatness. This however varies in The Crucible which is set in a theocratic society, in which church and state are one and the religion practised was very austere form of Protestantism known as Puritanism. In this form of society there is no room for deviation from social norms, since any individual whose private life does not conform to the established moral laws presents a threat not only to society but also to the rule of God: â€Å"You must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between†. John Proctor challenges this religious identity of time and shows how man has used god to manipulate and control individuals and it is ultimately his choice not to confess to witchcraft, which is a true religious and personal stance. In this way The Crucible can be viewed a symbolic of the paranoia of the communism which pervaded America in the 1950s. Several parallels existed between the witch hunts of 1692 and the House Un-American Activities Committee's rooting out of suspected communists. As with the alleged witches of Salem, suspected Communists were encouraged to confess their crimes and to â€Å"name names,† identifying others sympathetic to their radical cause. Miller through the actions of the hero Proctor foregrounds the McCarthyist excesses, which wronged many innocents, making a strong political statement. Furthermore, both Odysseus and Proctor are flawed and fallible and both of them fall into the seductive charms of the ‘seductresses' as is portrayed in the texts. Women are presented as either ‘sainted virgins'; Elizabeth and Penelope or ‘seductresses'; Abigail and Calypso this dichotomy represents the patriarchal structures of the context of the texts. Moreover the texts also highlight the dangers of giving women power and of female sexual potency. Odysseus' infidelity when he is trapped by Calypso serves to reflect gender roles and the double standard in Greek society. Homer does not invite the responder to view Odysseus' infidelity with any disdain or disapproval: â€Å"withdrawing into the cavern's deep recesses, long in each others arms they lost themselves in love† (#250-51). It is somehow acceptable for Odysseus to sleep with another woman, while Penelope is represented as morally dubious for allowing the suitors to remain in the house. It is only Calypso who challenges these gender roles: â€Å"You unrivalled lords of jealously/ scandalized when goddess sleep with mortals†¦ † (#131-32). While Homer portrays these sexist views, he also through Calypso's dialogue brings to attention the double standards of the society and more importantly introduces a new idea which may have been viewed as subversive in Greek culture at the time. On the other hand in The Crucible, John Proctor as the play's tragic hero is honest, upright and blunt spoken, Proctor is a good man however his fatal flaw is his lust for Abigail Williams which leads to their affair. Proctor is very self-critical and this in a way reflects how his moral code is a product of the society in which he exists: â€Å"But I will cut my hand off before I'll ever reach for you again†. Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes that he can stop Abigail's rampage through Salem but only if he confesses to this adultery. This highlights how the hero must face a series of trials and tribulations in order to be redeemed, in Proctor's case these are more physiological battles whereas Odysseus faces more physical challenges. This illustrates the way in which the different contexts result in the formation of varying hero's reflecting the values of that particular society. Finally, Arthur Miller once said: â€Å"Nobody wants to be a hero†¦ but in every man there is something he cannot give up and still remain himself†¦ If he gives that up, he becomes a different man, not himself†¦ It is Proctor's self-critical nature which distinguishes him because he does not set out to be a hero. Normally he would not be considered a saintly individual, and he has not great eagerness to be a martyr due to his underlying guilt at his infidelity, which in turn he projects on Elizabeth: â€Å"I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. † Nevertheless when put to the final test, the meaning here of ‘crucible', he will go to his death rather than irrevocably compromise his integrity. Through his representation of Proctor as the tragic hero Miller creates a new post-modern ideology of the hero in which the hero is not extraordinary physically or mentally but rather what is heroic is the individual who stands by his personal principals, he does not set out to be the hero but rather the situation merely reveals the hero within. This notion explores the concerns of 1950 America in which the hero's were not the McCarthyist's as it might seem on outward examination but rather those who only through their personal actions transpired to be essentially heroic. In conclusion, The Odyssey and The Crucible through the representation of the hero in text foreground the concerns of their times. The texts have revealed to me that what constitutes the hero varying according to context and setting and can help us gain further insight into the concerns of the society in question. Essentially the characteristics, which form the hero, are fluid subject to the values and culture of the times.

Her experiences with the school in El Mangle, I thought, in some ways became valuable tools shed eventually use in crisis situations. One experience Negi describes during an embarrassing moment showed that there was probably an even earlier interest in performing arts than Negi had originally anticipated. As Negi attempted to solve the math problem center stage, with a bloodthirsty audience looking on, her performing skills had already began to develop. She had no idea that she would be asked to replay a similar role in the future. Being called an ignorant jibara and immediately defending herself presented an unyielding attitude that Negi would benefit in a world of performing. When she describes herself leaving her body, her description of the process resembles a popular scene used in some movie scr ipts. Often time writers will have a particular scene written in their movies where they use a similar process. The deceased man watches the doctors pound on his chest in an attempt to revive him or the woman killed in an automobile accident watches her children mourn as shes laid to rest.
